TODAY IN SEATTLE-AREA HISTORY, Mar 26

Sen. Robert Kennedy campaigns in 1968 in Seattle for the Democratic nomination for president. Speaking to more than 10,000 people at UW and referring to the Vietnam War and protests at home, the New York senator pledges, “We can do better. There are no easy solutions to the strife at home … but there are ways we can do better.”  Jim Whittaker, the first American to climb Mount Everest, serves as state campaign chairman. (About two months later, Kennedy is shot and killed in Los Angeles after winning the California primary.)
