TODAY IN SEATTLE-AREA HISTORY, Apr 8

The Seattle Pilots, the city’s first Major League Baseball team, in 1969 play their first regular-season game, beating the California Angels in Anaheim. Pilots starting pitcher Marty Pattin, acquired from the Angels in the expansion draft, is ecstatic about beating his ex-teammates: “It was tremendous! It was a great thrill!” The Pilots remain in Seattle only one season before moving to Milwaukee and becoming the Brewers. (MLB returns to Seattle with the Mariners in 1977.)
