TODAY IN SEATTLE-AREA HISTORY, Jan 16

A Seattle-bound Northwest Airlines plane in 1951 crashes on a farm in Lincoln County, killing all 10 people on board. Authorities conclude that the probable cause was the pilot’s sudden loss of control for unknown reasons. Immediately after the crash, Northwest pilots refuse to fly the Martin 2-0-2 plane; between August 1948 and January 1951 there had been five accidents in which 89 people were killed. Two months later, Northwest says the planes would be removed from service and replaced by the Douglas DC-4.
