TODAY IN SEATTLE-AREA HISTORY, Jan 29

Washington pioneer Ezra Meeker in 1906 leaves his Puyallup home to retrace the old emigrant trail to Oregon. Meeker, wife Eliza and infant son Mariontraveled to Oregon Territory over the trail in 1852, settling in and founding the town of Puyallup. Meeker’s wagon in 1906 is an old-style prairie schooner of the type used by thousands of Western pioneers who made the great overland migration to the Oregon Country/Oregon Territory between 1841-’70. Meeker’s journey this time is to publicize the historical importance of the Oregon Trail and to seek federal funding for its preservation.
