The Seattle Symphony Orchestra announces in 1954 the hiring of famed conductor Milton Katims, a noted violist who gained his reputation through national broadcasts by the NBC Orchestra. For the opening of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, Katims directs a concert featuring pianist Van Cliburn at the new Opera House. He continues as musical director until 1976, when he is replaced by Rainer Miedel. Katims, 96, dies in 2006.
