TODAY IN SEATTLE-AREA HISTORY, Feb 14

A Seattle group announces plans in 1963 to tear down Pike Place Market and replace it with parking and office and hotel space, “a visitor and tourism attraction quite equal to the Los Angeles Farmers’ Market.” Opponents speak out, and debate over the Market’s future continues for the next eight years. The issue is resolved in 1971 when Seattle voters approve Initiative No. 1, which prohibits alterations, demolition or construction at the Market without approval of a 12-member commission.
The Market opened August 17, 1907, and is one of the oldest continuously operated public farmers’ markets in the United States. It is a place of business for many small farmers, craftspeople and merchants. Named after the central street, Pike Place runs northwest from Pike Street to Virginia Street.
Hey, I also hope you have a very Happy Valentines Day! <3
