An under-construction section of UW’s Husky Stadium collapses in 1987. The 215-foot, 13,000-seat addition to the north stands becomes, in about 12 seconds, a 250-ton pile of twisted steel. Photographer John Stametsis riding his bicycle past the stadium and stops to take pictures when the structure begins shaking violently. He captures nine shots of the collapse. About 40 workers are evacuated when an ironworker sees a buckle in the overhanging roof; no one is injured. Despite the collapse, the stadium addition is finished by Sept. 5, the season’s first home game.
