TODAY IN SEATTLE-AREA HISTORY, Feb 13

In 1979, the western half of the Hood Canal Bridge sinks during a severe storm with winds of 80-120 mph. Highway 104 connects the Kitsap Peninsula with the Olympic Peninsula, and is the world’s first floating pontoon bridge built over saltwater and subject to tides. The western half of the bridge is rebuilt with heavier anchors, and it opens to traffic in October 1982. As a precaution, the bridge closes when winds reach 40 mph for 15 minutes.
