TODAY IN SEATTLE-AREA HISTORY, Feb 27

In 1952, the Seattle Civil Defense Corps tests a super siren as part of preparedness for possible nuclear attack during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. The 3-ton siren is put up at the police garage at Fifth Avenue and Cherry Street, and equipment is set up to see if the signal can “penetrate office buildings above the clatter of office noise.” Planning includes 867 fallout shelters in Seattle, which are stocked with food. Test results of the 135-horsepower super siren are mixed, as it reportedly upset pigeons downtown and could not be distinctly heard in some buildings.
