The Spokane Tribe in 1887 cedes more than 3 million acres of land to the U.S. for about 32 cents an acre. Chief Spokane Garry, 76, signs the treaty, as does most of the other leaders of the tribe, which is assigned 154,898 acres as a reservation at the mouth of the Spokane River. In 1966, the tribe accepts a settlement of $6.7 million for the land.
