TODAY IN SEATTLE-AREA HISTORY, Feb 20

The interurban rail service between Everett and Seattle ends in 1939 after 40 years. The Seattle-Everett line extends from downtown Seattle near today’s Westlake Center, runs north to Fremont via Westlake Avenue, up Phinney and Greenwood avenues, and follows a route later paralleled by Highway 99. The service plays a major role in developing Seattle’s northern neighborhoods and suburbs. The completion of Highway 99 in 1932 and growing competition from autos doom the line.
